Understanding completely that I am very late to this party, I would like to publicly state that now that I've encountered Taylor Jenkins Reid, I am ALL IN!
Yesterday I finished THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO and I was sold. A couple hours later I started ONE TRUE LOVES and literally cannot put it down. I went to a movie this afternoon, and the entire time I kept thinking "I should leave so I can go read."
So, Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of those authors that I'd always see here and there; she'd come up as recommendations on Amazon and other book pages that I follow. For some reason, I was always like "yeah, yeah... I'll get there eventually." I even looked up all her books and had bought two or three of them over the past couple years; they just sat on my Kindle.
I even had the pleasure of meeting Julia Whelan (author and narrator) back in May and she was raving about her books (she narrates a few of Reid's books) and my sister (who I trust implicitly) was saying how much she was loving SEVEN HUSBANDS. But still... I had others that I wanted to get to first.
And then last weekend, I started THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO and I was hooked. It's such a unique story and so well told. Taylor Jenkins Reid can tell the hell out of a story. I started listening to ONE TRUE LOVES on my two-hour drive yesterday and when I got home, continued reading it on my Kindle before I fell asleep. When I woke up this morning, I started reading again, and when I left the aforementioned movie, I walked across the street, planted myself on a park bench and read for the next two hours. That feeling when you "discover" an author that you love and have all of their books ahead of you? Best in the world. I'm already sad thinking about being done with all her books, and I even got an ARC of her new book, coming out next March.
I was trying to think of the last time that I "found" an author I loved late and binged all their books, and I believe it was when I heard Kelly Corrigan speak at a Random House event last fall. I'd vaguely heard of her, but after she spoke, I fell head over heels in love and immediately bought all her books. I read four straight over two weeks last November.
The same held true with the Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series, though I only read the first three straight through and then needed to take a break. I enjoyed the books and plan to eventually finish the series, but that binge felt different since it was a story; there's something about finding an author and reading different types of books to appreciate their ability to tell different stories.
I remember back in the day when I discovered Rosamund Pilcher's THE SHELL SEEKERS, not only did I fall in love with her writing, but I fell in love with Cornwall, England (an entirely different post for another day!) and I wanted to read everything of hers that I could. I recently traveled to Cornwall and ahead of that trip, I re-read a couple of her shorter books.
There are times that I've recommended authors to friends and I get so jealous that they have all those great books ahead of them. If you're someone who's already familiar with Taylor Jenkins Reid, I know exactly how you feel right now!
Who are some of the authors that you binged on and recommend to others?
